I got Windows Vista Home Premium on a dell laptop is it a good idea to get Windows XP Home and remove Vista?
My laptop is running very slowly because of vista, I know this because I have very few things installed on my laptop and I only use it to store word documents, plus I have a desktop with nearly the same specs but running on XP and it runs just fine.
So is it a good idea to remove Vista from my laptop and install XP?
Maybe.
I’ve heard of computers actually becoming slower when installing XP over Vista.
I have a suspicion that your slowness is probably caused by some OEM crapware garbage…unless you installed Vista on your own. See if you have any OEM junk installed, and uninstall what you don’t need.
Make sure you’ve got Vista SP1 installed along with all of the recent updates, including (correct) driver updates. Also ensure that your hard disk has been defragmented.
In the worst case, you may just have very bad “Windows Rot” (a phenomena in which your PC gradually becomes slower and slower to the point where it’s practically unusable – Windows Vista is more “immune” to this than Windows XP). The only true solution for Windows Rot is an OS reinstall.
(Note: Windows 7, which will be released later this year, apparently outperforms both Windows Vista and Windows XP. If you don’t mind waiting or having to pay for a new OS, give Win7 a try – the Release Candidate is available for public download now: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/download.aspx)
