how long does a notebook battery usually last? what must i do in so to use the power supply from a power source instead of using battery-power to operate? what would i need?

The life of a battery is all over the map really. Some can go in as quick as 2 hours. Some can last as long as 8 hours. Thats in the case of a single charge. In terms of the entire battery, it could last 1-2 years or it could last 4-5 years. It fully depends on how many times you recharge it and how you treat it generally.
If you want/need to by-pass the battery, you simply plug in the power cable into the laptop. That’s it, nothing complicated. Then it will run on regular current, like any other computer.
